About Napoleon Cat Breed

The Minuet is a hybrid mix of Persian and Munchkin cat breeds. Categorized by The International Cat Association as a domestic hybrid, "developed from a deliberate cross between two existing domestic breeds, incorporating characteristics of both parental breeds into the new mix." .

WHAT IS A NAPOLEON AND WHAT IS A MINUET?

Picture

What is a Napoleon? And how is it different from a Munchkin? The Munchkin is known for having short legs or is a dwarf cat breed. If you like the short legs of the Munchkin and you like the traditional face of the Persians then this breed is for you. These two breeds were crossed to produce a new breed which had been named the Napoleon.  Joe Smith was the founder of this breed and that is how he felt too. Also he hoped that any non-standard or normal legged kittens would look like Persians so they were less likely to be into the shelters. This new fad of crossing other purebreds to Munchkins has caught on to involve several new breeds now called the dwarf or designer breeds. There are several comparison pictures at the bottom of this page. There are many new dwarf designer breeds. So the difference between the Munchkin and the Napoleon is the head type. But this is not true for some of  the other designer breeds. The Bambino has no hair and looks like a Spynx with short legs and the Lambkin looks like a Selkirk Rex with curly hair and short legs.  For more information go to TDCA The Dwarf Cat Association http://www.the-dwarf-cat-association.com/indexTDwarfCA.html

The Napoleon breed is a rare, hybrid breed created from the Munchkin with dwarf legs and the baby doll or traditional-faced Persians or Exotics. An example of a Napoleon is above. This is a shorthair brown tabby male. A litter of kittens can have both short-legged (standard) and long leg or normal legged (non-standard) kittens in it. The non-standard kittens look like Persians or Exotics depending on whether they have long or short hair. Our cats do not have the extreme flat face like show Persians have. These cats have a muzzle. The nose has a stop and a slight turn outward or "L" shape. Therefore the Naps do not suffer from the same problems that extremely flat-faced Persians have. The Munchkin's only outcross is the Domestic cat therefore the Munchkin has a head with a long sloping nose like the Domestics noses look. Munchkins come with short hair or long hair. Comparison pictures are at the bottom of this page.

The Naps have been accused of not having enough consistency in the looks of the breed. Since this is a new breed new breeds need a large population of outcross cats brought into the breed for hybrid vigor. At the present time, the Nap breeders are breeding a larger population of Persian group cats into to Naps. The parent breeds are the Persian group cats (including Himalayans and Exotics) and Munchkins. Naps can be bred to any of their parent breeds and to other Naps. So the look of the kitten that you buy will depend on which parents were used to produce this litter of kittens and how much of each breed is back in the kitten pedigree. The majority of the Nap kittens will most likely be first or second-generation Naps. The flatness of their faces will not only depend on the cats in your kitten's pedigree but also the typiness of the parents used. if show quality Munchkin was used the the kitten will have a longer nose. If an extremely flat-faced Persian or Exotics was used then the kittens will have flatter faces. The correct Persian or Exotic that should be used to produce Nap kittens is the traditional or doll-faced Persian which is what Persian exhibitors considered pet or breeder quality.

According to the Napoleon breed standard, they should look like traditional or doll faced Persians (longhair) or Exotics (shorthair) with a round head and round eyes. Their ears should be medium to small and the long hairs have a silky double coat. This means that the shorthairs have a thick, teddy bear coat just like the Exotics. The shorthairs are not as difficult to groom of course and Napoleons don't have the extreme flat face that can cause many health problems. The Napoleon comes in all the colors that Persians/Exotics have plus the Munchkin adds sepia and mink to the possibilities of colors. Naps also can come in the same patterns as well but the Naps do produce the chocolate group, odd eye bicolors, blue eyed bicolors which are little more difficult to get like in the Persians. The chocolate group includes, lilac, cinnamon and fawn. The latter two  being more difficult to produce.

Napoleon personality is quite unique. They never show aggression and they get along well with other animals very well. This includes other cats, dogs, parrots, rabbits, etc. They have a very affectionate, loving nature and they are loyal to their owners. They have been known to follow thier owners through the house. They are smart and easy to train. They can easily get used to a routine and they seem to understand how things work in their surroundings. They love discovering new things and they like cuddling any time of the day.  Many kitten buyers come back to buy the long-legged or normal-legged Naps just to get a cat with this wonderful personality. Most Nap breeders offer a two-kitten deal where a non-standard second kitten can be sold as a companion to go with the standard Napoleon. That is why the normal-legged version is almost as popular as the shorties are. I call my standards shorties.

The board of directors of TICA the registering association, decided that the name Napoleon was offensive to the French people therefore the Napoleon breed group had to rename the breed. As of January of 2015 the breed name was changed to Minuet. Most of these breeders did not want to change the name and are refusing to call our cats "Minuets". These breeders have contacted CFF and asked if the Napoleon breed and breeders could join their association. CFF has acepted us with open arms and nothing but kindness. The Naps will not be able to apply for championship until 2016 but this is much better than what TICA had offer.

After breeding Napoleons (Minuets) for over 3 years now I feel comfortable enough to really put myself out there and make a guarantee. "I guarantee that my Napoleon kittens and cats that come from my home are always affectionate!" The Napoleon breed's personality is never aggressive in any form. These kittens or cats do not ever show aggression, bite, scratch or anything like this. They may be afraid of something and struggle to try to get away from it and in doing so you may get scratched but that would be an accident and a sign that the kitty's nails might need to be clipped. Of course I can not make this guarantee for my cats that may have been living with someone else. At time my cats have shown to be a bit timid and sometime will run and hide from something that frightens them but I have never seen any of my cats start any disagreements with any other cats, dogs, etc and especially not humans. Since I do not have small children i can not make any guarantees how one of my kittens or cats might react to being handled excessively by a small child so I do recommend adult supervision when a small child is interacting with a Napoleon kitten or cat. Wile selling my recent litters of kittens, I have been asked this question a few times. My immediate thought was no way, I have never seen any sign of aggressiveness in this breed of cats.

Creators cattery was one of the first catteries to breed Napoleons and Margie has been a great asset to the breed. She and Terri Harris (Napoleonlane and napoleoncats.com catteries) had taken on the Breed Chair position in the effort to help push the breed up though TICA's ranks toward the goal of Championship status so that one day we can show our cats in TICA. The longhairs can have a plush long coat which is better that the Persians coat. The coat is less cottony and more of an all weather type of coat. They do not need as much grooming as the Persians.

Frenchie has also been shown in the Preliminary level in TICA which the cats do not earn titles but are counted as a representation of what the Nap breeders would show if they were in Championship status. This helps TICA know how popular the breed is and this lets them know how worthwhile it would be to promote the breed to Championship status. Photo courtesy Creators Cattery

This is what a point colored cat or Himalayan looks like. The term Himalayan is no longer used because this breed was added as a color group within the Persian breed many years ago. This would is a seal or chocolate point. All pointed colored cats have blue eyes. The eye color is directly linked to the cats coat color.

PictureThis is a Munchkin. SG Halleys Comet. Munchkins have a longer nose like the Domestic cats have. If a breeder uses a Munchkin in their breeding program then the kittens will have longer noses. If the breeder uses an extremely flat faced Persian then the kittens faces will be flatter. The goal of the breed is that the Naps have a Persian baby doll type face which is between both of the parent breeds face types. Photo Rugrunners Cattery.

She is a smoke tortie and she has been shown in TICA many times. The long hair Napoleons have a much more manageable coat than the Persians do so they don't need to be groomed as much as the Persians do. Photo courtesy Creators Cattery

PictureThis a Munchkin. SGC RW Rugrunners Phoenix. Ruggunners Cattery is owned by Sheri McConnell. Some judges and other people complain that the Naps have inconstancy in the their face types. The reason is that the two parent breeds have totally different face types. This is a new breed and breeders always breed to outcrosses when a new breed is started. This adds variety to the gene pool. Persians are known for their flat faces and long hair and Exotics are a short hair version of the Persian. I highly reccomend going to a cat show. You will enjoy yourself and you will learn a lot about cats. The Persians at the cat shows always look beautiful but you need to remember that it took months to prepare a Persian for the cat show. If you purchase a Persian or another long hair breed you must groom them everyday or their hair will mat up and this can possibly lead to some serious health problems as well as it is very uncomfortable. A lot of people have their Persian shaved down to eliminate this problem. This makes me wonder why they bought a Persian. If you can not maintain a beautiful long coat on your Persian i suggest that you purchase an Exotic instead The still need some grooming but not nearly as much work as the Persian requires. Persians must be bathed at least every month and brushed everyday.

My Cattery was established in 1985. I had bred Persians, Exotics and Selkirk Rex. This is one of my Selkirk Rex stud males. His name was Mauaristis's Feather Duster of Purwaky.

Our Location

Hello, My name is Rebecca Warren. Our cattery is a small hobby cattery that is located in our home. Our home is located in Indianapolis, which is in central Indiana. We are easy to get to from any of the surrounding states and we have large interstates that run through our city. I 65 runs north and south from Michigan to Florida and I 70 runs east and west through the central states. We do not ship our cats so you will have to drive to come and get your kitty or fly with it if the cat must fly. There are various services that can fly with your kitty or they can drive the kitty to you by land.

About Myself

I started breeding cats in 1985 and my cattery name is registered in all three associations which are CFA, ACFA and TICA. I had bred and shown Persians, Exotics and Selkirk Rex. I had gained mountains of information on the husbandry of raising purebred cats which included lots of reading and learning from other breeders. I moved into my parents home to care for them until they passed. So my obligation to them prevented me from traveling very far from the house to show my cats. I showed my cats in both CFA and ACFA and my cats did very well considering these limitations. I ran my cattery until about 2009 when I took a break for a few years while I went back to school to get my Bachelors degree. I only kept a pair of Napoleons to breed occasionally. I started my cattery up again in 2012 with Napoleons and Persians. While I was breeding cats I had collected many books, yearbooks, magazines and any other materiel to learn as much as I could in regards to cat health, husbandry, breeding, showing, breed standards, genetics and pedigree lines. I specifically enjoyed learning about color genetics. I collected pedigrees to add to my database. I learned how to run my cattery like a small business. I passed out business cards, advertised and promoted my cattery at the cat shows and wherever I could. I made sure my customers were happy and I had many trusted breeder friends that I exchanged kittens or cats with to prevent inbreeding. I often went to my buyers homes to help them with their cat's care. I worked closely with my vet and I mentored new breeders every chance I could. I also bred Yorkies with my mom. She enjoyed helping my with my cattery too. If you have any breeding/showing or other cat related questions feel free to ask me and I will make every effort to get an answer to you. I have never been a very competitive person. I was mostly at the shows to socialize and learn from the other breeders. I really loved being around friends at the shows and i joined the local cat club.

I did get titles on the majority of my cats and I had either championed or granded the majority of my cats. The cat I was most proud of was an Exotic shorthair named Purwaky Winky Dinky which I had produced myself. He was a kitten that had received a cut on his eye which luckily in the end needed an eyelid repared. He did go on to grand championship. The breeders at the shows used to say that any breeder can spend the money to buy a grandable show cat and show it to grand champion. The thing that measures you as a breeder and makes you proudest is granding a kitten that you produced yourself.  Winky was that cat for me.

The New APHIS Ruling

Please refer to the new APHIS ruling which has put all breeders in a new categorization. There are a lot of factors involved that would determine if a cattery should be licensed or not. APHIS is working with PETA and the Humane Society of the US in an effort to make pet breeders quit breeding their animals and to only have commercial breeders producing pets. You could help by contacting your Congressmen and plead with them to repeal these new rulings that are backed by PETA. Obama is not only making life difficult with the new health insurance plans but he is also trying to set up government run large sterile commercial facilities to produce your new non-socialized pet. Yet the Amish can keep their dirty puppy mills who sell their animals to the pet stores like Uncle Bills. These animals are in poor health and terrified of everything that is not familular to them. HSUS has lied to the public for years and they get away with it because nobody knows the truth about their intentions. They have gone so far as to admit that they want all the purebreds dead so that people could only get their pets from shelters. They are closely associated with PETA who wants to go to a meatless society and would like all Americans be Vegans. Please research this information and help us repeal this new ruling.

This new ruling does not only affect dog and cat breeders. These rulings affect every type of animal that is bred today. This includes horses, rodents, all small animals, birds, reptiles and every purebred animal intentionally bred by man.  Many of the breeders will quit breeding therefore the other pet industries will decline and the economy will suffer from it. There will be a lowered demand for pet food, supplies, services and many other areas that the pet companies rely on today. This will cause more jobs lost and will raise the price of pet supplies. Please go to my links page to link to the sites with more information and way that you can help to resist these new rules.

Did you know that the HSUS is in court now accused of committing fraud for making the public think that they donate more that 1% of their donations to shelters? The rest of their money goes for lobbying to change the laws in their favor to get rid of all meat producers, breeders and anyone else that is not like minded like them. The HSUS has admitted to telling shelters that it is okay to kill animals.
